Monitor Heater Burner Rings should last many years. If your ring is warped or cracked, it will need to be replaced.
If you have to replace the burner ring, check the burner mat on the bottom of the burner pot. If the mat is damaged, missing or curled up on the edges, this could cause a bad flame and cause your new burner ring to warp as well. It will also possibly affect the efficiency of your heater and result in the necessity of more service. If the burner mat is flat and in tact, it should be OK. It may be brittle but it is OK if it is flat and in tact. You can see what a new factory installed burner mat should look like HERE. There are very good, detailed photos of the inside of the burner pot if you scroll through all the photos.
If you remove the Flame Detective Plug in order to replace your burner ring, you may need to purchase a Flame Detective Plug Gasket. If needed, clean the Flame Detective Plug with an emory cloth prior to reinstallation. When re-installing the Flame Detective Plug, be sure that it is pointing straight down and that it is parallel to the side of the chamber.
